NVSS is a means to fun, fitness, and friendship, with an emphasis on safety and good sportsmanship.

Slow pitch softball for seniors in Northern Virginia began in the summer of 1980 with 47 players.  From that small beginning, Northern Virginia Senior Softball (NVSS) evolved and has grown to over 500 players on 25-30 teams in three skill-level Conferences.  It is a not-for-profit organization with officers and directors elected annually by its members.

Membership is open to men 50+ and women 40+. All new players are given a skill-level assessment and are assigned to a team at their skill level. Two seven (7) inning games are played each Tuesday and Thursday, beginning at 9:30am. Every player present is in the line up to bat and must play at least three innings at one of the 11 defensive positions. The Summer Season runs from mid-April to early August and the Fall Season is September and October. All games are played on Fairfax County fields.

NVSS also offers to its members for a fee an off-season conditioning and practice program from November through early April at the Springfield Sportsplex, and a free 'spring training' conditioning program at the  James Lee Center in Falls Church from February through early April.

You can join NVSS at anytime.  To join just open and complete the application listed  in the 'NVSS Forms' section or contact our Membership Chairman Ted Brown at ted.sharon@verizon.net or 703-913-0028

NVSS NVSS Members:

2011/   2012 Springfield Winter Program Underway

The second half starts on January 31st and continues until March 29th.

The sessions are from 9:30 to 11:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and from 11:30 to 1:30 and from 1:30 to 3:30 on Tuesday and Thursday.  Some sessions have vacancies while others are full.  If the sessions are full, you will be put on a waiting list.  We plan for no more than 24 participants at each session; Ray’s rule of thumb is to enroll no more than 28 since there are usually four or more absences.  We will not meet if the Fairfax County Schools cancel because of weather.  (Check your radio or TV for information.)

All other program details and fees remain the same as last year.  Contact Ray Steiger at 703-971-2124 or email him at Uraysteiger@aol.com if you have questions or want to join.

NOTE: There are a few openings in the Wednesday, 9:30-11:30AM session at the Springfield Sportsplex beginning anytime from January 4th on, going at least through March. We begin walking at 9AM, start stretching at 9:30AM, throw the ball, have batting practice, and then play a game in each of two arenas, using a slightly softer softball. To learn more and sign up, call Dave Scheele, 703-524-5576.
